"MARTEL.-On September 30, 1901, Jean C. Martel, in his 66th (sic) year. Funeral on this Wednesday, afternoon, at 1 o'clock, from 406 North Fifty-ninth street. Interment private."

Born at St. Ambroise de la Jeune Lorette (later known as Loretteville), PQ. Son of Louis Martel & Marie (Hamel) Martel. Husband of Emily Jessie (Morgan) Martel. Served with the 18th Mass. Vol. Inf. Civil War. Men's hairdresser 4th & Chestnut Sts. Philadelphia, Pa.

Civil War Union Army Soldier. He was mustered in as a Private in Company F, 18th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry on August 24, 1861. He served with his regiment until July 15, 1863, when he was transferred (due to sickness) {typhoid} to Company E, 19th Veterans Reserve Corps. He served in the VRC until he was honorably mustered out on August 24, 1864.

Member: Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) Gen. Meade Post #1. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Jean Charles Martel, was a direct descendant of Honoré Martel dit Lamontagne, who arrived in Québec, Canada, New France, on the ship Brézé 30 June 1665, with the Berthier Company of the Carignan Regiment (Carignan Salières).
