Army Spc. Stephen R. Fortunato, 25, of Danvers, Mass.; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas; died Oct. 14 of wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device in Qazi Bandeh, Afghanistan. Also killed were Spc. Cory J. Bertrand and Sgt. Preston R. Medley. Surviving him in addition to his parents Elizabeth A. "Betty" Crawford and Richard J. Fortunato and his wife Nancy, are two brothers, Joseph P. Fortunato and Anthony P. Fortunato both of Beverly; a stepbrother, Richard Brown of Peabody and a stepsister, Christy Pettipas of FL. He is also survived by his paternal grandmother, Veronica Fortunato of Beverly; and his wife, Sherri (Favoloro) Fortunato of Manchester by the Sea; also many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was the grandson of the late Robert and Katherine Crawford and the late Stephen Fortunato. His great uncle, Peter Fortunato served three terms as mayor from 1978 to 1983.
