Civil War: Served as a Sergeant in Company C, 10th Cavalry Regiment Illinois. Enlisted November 1, 1861, mustered out in San Antonio, TX November 22, 1865. Regiment was organized for Western Frontier Service, but sent South instead. It served in the Mississipp Valley, then was sent into Missouri and Arkansas where it did rough rider service against General Price. In 1863 they campaigned among the Iron mountains, then went to Helena and Little Rock, and in the spring of 1864 went south by boat to New Orleans. They were employed in operations about Mobile and Montgomery, Alabama, and then took part in the Red River expedition of General Banks. At the close of the war they escorted General Sheridan across Texas to San Antonio. James Curry received his honorable discharge and returned home with the consciousness of having performed long and faithful service in behalf of his country

His parents were William and Nellie (Cunningham) Curry, both born in Mercer County, Kentucky. They moved to Brown County, Illinois in 1842. His father died at age 48 and his mother at age 47, both in Missouri Township, Brown County, Illinois. They left seven children, two sons and five daughters.

James married Elizabeth Byrns in Brown county in November 1866. She was born in Portage County, Ohio and reared in Carroll county. She came to Illinois when she was 16. Her parents were James and Margaret (Gonvales) Byrns.

They had 7 children. In addition to the six linked to this memorial was son William Curry, who died young.
