He was the son of John McDOWELL and Elizabeth Julian MOORE McDowell. He married Rosa Bell WAPLES 26 Dec 1878 in Livingston Co., Illinois. She was 15. They had one child, Horace Bertram. They then divorced and Lewis Preston married second Huldah KINKEAD on 3 Nov 1890 in Garden City, Finney Co., Kansas and they had three children: Claudon J, Henry Lewis, and Florence Elizabeth.
