Mrs. Marie Kraut, 86, Dies Thursday
Pioneer Citizen Succumbs At Home south of Hardin; Burial Saturday
Mrs. Maria Kraut, an aged and highly respected citizen of Calhoun County died at the Kraut homeplace in Salt Spring Hollow southwest of Hardin, Ill., Dec. 29, 1932, at the age of 86 years, 4 months and 7 days. Mrs. Kraut was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Pate and she was born in the state of Mississippi on the 22nd day of August 1846. Mrs. Kraut has been a citizen of Calhoun County for 67 years, she and her husband coming to Calhoun in the year 1866 and has made her home on the farm where she met death, since that time. She was a wonderful citizen and a loving and devoted mother. The husband preceded the wife in death a number of years ago.
Mrs. Kraut was united in marriage with John Kraut in the year 1864 at Hillsboro, Mo., and to their union eight children were born, two of whom preceded the mother in death. The following two daughters and four sons are left to mourn the departure of their dear mother: Mrs. Sophia Mathews of near Hardin, Mrs. Mattie Kraut of St. Louis, John Kraut, Charley Kraut, William Kraut and Herman Kraut of near Hardin. Two nieces, Mrs. Chas. Cooke of near Gilead, and Mrs. Hattie Herron of Roodhouse, Illinois, 22 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren also survive; and with a great host of friends will miss her passing.
Funeral services were held at the Kraut home Saturday afternoon, Dec. 31st, Rev. J. W. Heller, pastor of the Presbyterian church of Hardin officiating and interment was in the DeLong cemetery at Gilead. A large crowd attended the funeral which bore evidence of the high esteem in which Grandma Kraut was held in life.
