Mrs. Maria Potter, the venerable mother of Hon. Allen Potter, died at his residence on South street, last night about eight o'clock, after an illness of several weeks, in the eightieth year of her age. Her illness was heart disease complicated with other ills. Mrs. Potter and her husband came to Michigan at an early day, and were among the pioneers of Hillsdale county. They came to this State from Saratoga County, New York, in 1836, settling first in Lenawee County, but only remained there a short time. They then went and settled in Moscow and lived there many years. In 1845-6 Mr. and Mrs. Potter came to Kalamazoo, soon after Allen Potter came here. Mrs. Potter's health has been generally good until within the past few months, when she became seriously affected with rheumatism. In her last illness her suffering has been very great, but everything has been done to alleviate her pain which affection and patient attention could devise. The funeral took place this (Saturday) afternoon at 4 o'clock from the residence of Hon. Allen Potter, on South street, and was very largely attended. Kalamazoo Daily Telegraph June 9, 1875 page 4
