Nelson Hockman enlisted on February 6, 1864 in Company I of the 19th Indiana Infantry which was a part of the famous "Iron Brigade" that fought during the Civil War. He was wounded at the Battle of the Wilderness on May 5, 1864 and died the following month because of that wound.
