The Rev. Roger W. "Buddy" Reed, 70, went to be with the Lord, Oct. 21, 2008, after a courageous 14-year battle with Alzheimer's Disease. A celebration of his life will be 1:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, at Cottonwood Baptist Church, 890 FM 2643 in Lorena. Following the celebration service, there will be a visitation time with the family in the fellowship hall of the church.

Buddy was born in Houston, Texas, to the late William Rodger Reed and Edna Stringer Reed. Buddy grew up in Kirbyville, Texas, and graduated from Kirbyville High School in 1956, where he participated in football, basketball, track, tennis, and band. On Dec. 29, 1956, he married Marcell Smith. He received a BBA from Lamar University in 1970 and a MRE from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1974. Buddy worked for the DuPont Company in Beaumont for nine years. In 1967, he committed his life to serving the Lord as minister and served as a pastor of churches in Texas. He was pastor of College Street Baptist Church in Beaumont, Mertens Baptist Church in Mertens, Texas, First Baptist Church of Salado, Tanglewood Baptist Church of Jasper, First Baptist Church of Robinson and Bruceville Baptist Church in Bruceville. In 1997, Bruceville Baptist Church honored him with the designation of Pastor Emeritus. Wherever he lived, Buddy was always involved in the community, including the Lion's Clubs in Lumberton, Jasper, and Robinson, as well as the Chamber of Commerce in Salado. In the areas where Buddy served as pastor, he was active in the Baptist Associations, including the Waco Baptist Association, where he served as moderator (1991-92) and Evangelism Director (1982-1995), plus he served on various other committees. At the time of his death, Buddy was a member of Cottonwood Baptist Church. Buddy was a wonderful pastor, and a loving husband, father, grandfather and a friend to all. He will be missed dearly.

Survivors include his wife, Marcell; son, David Reed and wife, Dana, of Lorena; daughters, Susan Fletcher and husband, Robbie, of Lorena, and Rebecca Nickell and husband, Jeff, of Waco; grandchildren, Jessica and husband, Brandon, Austin, Jordan, Amanda, Cody, Rachel, Bethany, Julie, Brant, Michael and Allison; brother, Bruce Reed and wife, Lana, of Pflugerville; and a step-brother, John Reed and wife, Jeri, of Porter, Texas.
