Dexter Avery enlisted in Company B of the Eleventh Michigan Infantry on October 24, 1862. He was listed as a prisoner-of-war at Stones River, Tennessee on January 2, 1863, and was later discharged for disability at Camp Chase, Ohio, on April 16, 1863. Dexter then enlisted in Company A of the Reorganized Fourth Michigan Infantry on August 5, 1864, for 3 years of service and was promoted to Corporal on September 2, 1865.He was promoted to Sergeant shortly afterwards, on October 14, 1865. He mustered out of service on May 26, 1866, at Houston, Texas.
