Enlisted on 24 August 1861 at Ogden Township, Lenawee County, Michigan; he was residing in Lenawee County prior to his enlistment at 28 years of age; was mustered in on 1 September 1861 into Co. K, 11th Michigan Volunteer Infantry, as a private; promoted to corporal on 15 September 1863; captured and imprisoned on 20 September 1863 during the Battle of Chickamauga; died of typhoid fever while a POW at Andersonville Prison.
