Jimmie Dean McKinney, 70, and Nancy Jean McKinney, 58, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2008, in a house fire at their home.

Jimmie served with the Bartholomew County Sheriff's Department for 50 years and as the sheriff from 1971 to 1978 and a third term from 1983 to 1986. He was an eight-year Army veteran serving with the Military Police.

Nancy was serving as Bartholomew County auditor and was vice president of the Southeast District County Auditors Association. She was a member of the Legislative Committee and Zonta Club.

Mr. and Mrs. McKinney's funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Community Church of Columbus, 3850 N. Marr Road, with the Rev. Jerry K. Day Sr. officiating. Calling will be from 3:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the church and from noon until service time Monday at the church. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery. Military graveside rites for Jimmie will be conducted by the Bartholomew County Veterans Color Guard.

Arrangements were made by Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions in memory of Jimmie be made to the Indiana Sheriff's Association Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 19127, Indianapolis, IN 46219. Memorial contributions in memory of Nancy may be made to Riley Hospital for Children Burn Center, 50 S. Meridian St., Suite 500, Indianapolis, IN 46204.

Mr. McKinney was born Sept. 17, 1938, in Columbus, the son of Dean and Lucy Gabbard McKinney.

Mrs. McKinney was born Aug. 9, 1950, in Columbus, the daughter of Dallas I. and Margaret J. Hutsen Lane.

Jimmie and Nancy were married Sept. 3, 1971.

They are survived by their son, Matthew (Heather) McKinney of Zionsville, and grandchildren, Connor, Nathan and Phoebe McKinney.

Jimmie is also survived by his mother, Lucy McKinney of Columbus; a brother, Glen (Wanda) McKinney of Columbus; and sisters, Carolyn (David) Weddle and Sharon Carter, both of Columbus.

Mr. McKinney was preceded in death by his father.

Nancy is also survived by a brother, John T. (Melanie) Lane of Columbus.

Mrs. McKinney was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Linda Lane.
