Elizabeth was the daughter of Albert Wooten, a farmer, and Nancy Butler, who came to Missouri from Kentucky in the early 1840s. They settled in Sullivan County soon after their arrival in Missouri and continued farming there for the rest of their lives. Elizabeth was the third of ten children, all born in Missouri. She had six sisters and three brothers.

Elizabeth became the first wife of Daniel Head, also a farmer. They were married in Sullivan County on September 12, 1870. Elizabeth died only 13 days after their marriage. Daniel married twice more: In 1876 he wed Sarah Harmon, with whom he had two children. In 1887 he wed Rebecca Morelock, with whom he had thirteen children.

Elizabeth is buried in McCulla Cemetery, which is also known as the Head Family Cemetery. Daniel was still living in Sullivan County when he died in 1918 and he is also buried there along with his third wife, Rebecca, and one of their children, John.
