Melvin W. Schurter, age 91 of Browns Mills, passed away October 15, 2008 at home.

Mr. Schurter grew up in the Forrest Valley area of Hamilton Township and graduated from Hamilton High School in 1935. He attended Trenton Technical Institute and was a sheet metal worker of Charlie Carl, Delta Heating, Royal Engineering, and New Brunswick Scientific. The family moved to the Allentown area in 1950 and he and his wife moved to Cream Ridge in 1972 before moving to Browns Mills in 2002.

An avid Civil War buff, Mr. Schurter published an article in the Civil War Times about his great-grandfather, Mahlon Sprague of Hamilton and loved attending Civil War Round Table meetings.

Mr. Schurter was the son of the late William F. and Stella Schurter née McNeal; husband of the late Lucille née Gray; brother of the late Anna Schultz and William and Vernon Schurter and grandfather of the late Brian Schurter.

Melvin is survived by two sons & daughters-in-law, Donald & Janyce of Albuquerque, NM and Ted & Terri of Ewing; two daughters & sons-in-law, June & John Hicks of McMinnville, and Barbara & Don Barnett of Browns Mills, with whom he lived; eight grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
