YOUTH KILLED IN GUN TRAGEDY

Travis Joel Abbott was born April 12, 1948 at St Charles hospital in Bend, Oregon to Kenneth Albert Abbott and Vilda Ann (Suttle) Abbott. Bend Bulletin makes announcement "born today, baby boy, weighs seven pounds and named Travis Joel.

He started school in Bend, Oregon and had finished his junior year at Crook County High School. His parents had gone their separate ways and both had remarried. Travis is now living with his mom and stepfather Ray Rickman. His father Kenneth Abbott is killed in a boating accident off Winchester Bay, Oregon in 1962 when Travis is just fourteen years old.

Travis and several friends are out rabbit hunting on the Rickman ranch located about nine miles north of Brothers, Oregon with some .22 rifles. Travis was driving the car when he stepped out of the car right in the line of fire. Another boy was firing over the open back door and the bullet hit him in the left side of the head. The Bend ambulance was called and made arrangements to meet the car which was transferring Travis. The car runs out of gas and they push it for seven miles. The ambulance misses connection with the car and turns around at Brothers. All this to no avail as investigator said death was instantaneous. Gone on August 21, 1965, Travis was just seventeen years old.

He leaves behind mother and stepfather Vilda and Ray Rickman, stepmother Josephine Abbott, grandparents Orisa Abbott, and John Suttle.
