George Gano is the eldest son of Stephen Gano & Martha Quick Gano and one of 15 children. He was born Nov. 17, 1811 and baptized in Jan. 1812 at the Neshanic Reformed Church.
His siblings, which may not all be linked due to being unable to find all their graves, are as follows: Catherine b.1813, Eliza b.1815, Abraham b.1817, Rebecca Voorhees b.1819, Mary Ann b.1821, Ellen b.1822, Martha b.1825, Joakim b. 1826, Jane b.1828, Magdalen b.1830, Christopher b.1832, Sarah b.1834, Caroline b.1835, and Stephen b.1838.
He married Catherine Higgins (b.1815, d. May 13, 1884) on Sept. 15, 1832. They had 7 children: Martha Eleanor b.1834, Ann Rebecca b.1837, Mary Elizabeth b.1841, Julia Catherine b.1844, John Higgins b.1846, Stephen G. b.1850, and Georgiana b.1857.
In 1850 they lived in Branchburg, N.J. with 6 children. The value of their Real Estate was $9,700 . He was a Farmer.
In 1860 he was still farming and they still lived in Branchburg (Neshanic on the census) . They are now living with 5 children and George's youngest brother Stephen Gano is living with them working on the farm. The value of his Real Estate is now $16,000 and personal Estate is $4,000. They have 2 farm helpers and 1 servant. Daughters Martha and Ann Rebecca are not living at home and Georgiana is there.
In 1870, George now 58 is still faming at the same place. The Real Estate is now up to $20,000 and the personal estate is $18,000, so life has gotten more prosperous. There are only 4 of his children living at home now with the addition of a "Virginia Nevius", who may be a relative?), and a Catherine Wright, a "black" domestic servant, 17 yrs old.
In 1880 George has now retired and he and Catherine live in a home in West Raritan, N.J. They have a boarder Clara 22yrs old, and "Ann Leigh" a 62 yr old "black" servant.
Catherine dies in May of 1884.
George lives another 6 years without her. He passes away on Feb. 10, 1890 in Neshanic Station, N.J. at the age of 78 due to Apoplexy.
A beautiful Grave monument is visible from the street at the Baptist Church in Flemington, N.J.
