Obituary - Naomi (Nay Nay) Young Spence James Schettler, age 102, well-known and oldest surviving granddaughter of Brigham Young, passed away in Salt Lake City on January 5, 1990.
Born to Don Carlos and Alice Naomi Dowden Young on December 30, 1887, in Salt Lake City, Utah Territory, she was the eldest daughter and last surviving of 15 children.
She married John Leslie Spence on September 30, 1907 in Ogden, Utah; solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He died in 1911. She married Parley James on June 22, 1918; he died in 1957. Married Orson Schettler on January 7, 1966; he died in 1968.
A stalwart member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she actively served throughout her life in the organizations of the Church including Relief Society, Primary, Mutual, and Sunday School. Member of the Ensign 2nd Ward.
Blessed with a remarkable memory, she could recall in detail, events and names spanning a period of nearly 100 years and was interviewed often about the early history of the Church in the Salt Lake area. She was one of the co-founders of the Granddaughters of Brigham Young Association and also one of the original members of the Lindsay Gardens Camp of DUP.
A lover of the Fine Arts, she was an accomplished artist who received her training from James Harwood, Joseph Everett, and Michael Cannon. Her beautiful watercolors remain a legacy of her special talent. She studied voice and elocution and gave many performances in her earlier years.
The honored matriarch of a noble family and beloved mother to many, she is survived by her children, Mrs. Alice Y. Spence Counter, Mrs. Louise Spence Clark, Elmer A. and Marie James, all of Salt Lake City; Mrs. Paul (Ethel) James Larson of Sheridan, Montana; and Mrs. Blanca James of Columbus, Ohio; 15 grandchildren, 56 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, January 10, 1990 at 12 noon at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple Street, where friends may call on Wednesday from 10 am until services. Interment: Salt Lake City Cemetery.
