He was the son of Raford Cannon and Elizabeth Jane Hollis Cannon Jefferson. He was the brother of Sarah Elizabeth Cannon Cooper and Rachael A. Cannon Harris. He married Cassie Ann Jacobs in 1872 and they had six children: Martha Ann, John William, Mary Emeline, Flora Belle, Robert Lafayette and Laura Elizabeth. His father died when he was 8 years old and he became the man of the house. He helped his mother with the farming. In 1862 he was conscripted into the Confederate Army from Yellville Arkansas. He deserted 8 months later and joined the Union Army and stayed until the end of the war.
