Delvis Fernandez of Sarasota, Florida was a star wide receiver at Booker High School who still liked to visit the team and often spent time helping out on the field. No one worked harder, cared more, or gave more. He joined the Marine Corps Reserves and came back to Sarasota in April after serving in Iraq. As a Marine, Delvis spent 8 months fighting for his country in Iraq. He and his fellow Marines ran convoys and he made a point to write home to his mother and family as often as possible. He survived Iraq, only to be gunned down here at home. He dreamed of becoming a police officer and helping kids and was just accepted on the Sarasota Police Department. Delvis was shot and killed in broad daylight. It happened at the Star Mini Mart just a few blocks from Booker High School.
