Willis Jackson Hopkins, age 74 years, 1 month, and 7 days, died suddenly at his home last Friday morning. He died instantly, falling in the yard. Mr. Hopkins was at home alone. The tragedy was witnessed by a neighbor man and help was summoned.
Funeral Services were held Sunday afternoon at the Christian Church conducted by Rev. R. L. Allen, assisted by the Rev. D.S. Scrivner. Interment was in the Bloomfield Cemetery with Chiles services.
Mr. Hopkins was the son of Abijah and Louisa (White) Hopkins and was born near Bloomfield, February 22, 1866. The Hopkins were a respected influential pioneer family. They hewed their homes out of the widlerness and helped to make Stoddard County what is today. Mr. Hopkins grew up with the county and always eager to serve his fellow man, found amply ways in which to do it, making a wide acquaintance and many friends. His worth was attested to by the great number who came to pay their last respects.
On September 28, 1890, Mr. Hopkins was united in marriage with Miss Nancy Ann Barham. To this union five children were born, three surviving, Mrs. Zelma King of Poplar Bluff, Vester of Chaffee and Harold of Bloomfield. On September 8, 1912, he was united in marriage to Miss Nellie Hudgens. Three children were born to them all of whom with the Mother survive. They are Eugene and Malcolm of Bloomfield and Mrs. Jewel Russell of Los Angeles, California. He also leaves 4 grandchildren. In 1889 he united with the Anderson General Baptist Church, later to be known as the Aid General Baptist Church. He remained a consistent communicant to the end.
