RIVERTON—A 5-year-old girl was killed Thursday about 10:20 a.m. when she was hit by a car at 2736 W. 12600 South.
GLORIA ZOE ANN GILBERT, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin V. Gilbert, 2753 W. 12600 South, was pronounced dead on arrival at Salt Lake General Hospital. The hospital said she died of head injuries. Sgt. Keith. Iba of the Salt Lake County Sheriff's office said "the girl started to run north-across the highway when she was struck by an eastbound car and knocked 46 feet." The car was driven by Elmer Crane Newman, 27, 736 Columbia Dr., Midvale, Sgt. Iba said. Witnesses told Sgt. Iba: the girl started to run across the street to meet a girl friend. They estimated the speed of the car at 35 mph — less than the speed limit on the highway, Sgt. Iba said.
