Emile Rudolph Byington, 84, Lava Hot Springs, died late Tuesday at St. Anthony Community Hospital following a brief illness.

He was born March 11, 1893, at Menan, Idaho. When he was 10, he moved with his parents to homestead on the Portneuf River north of Lava and has since been a resident of this area.

He was a rancher, cattleman, and trucker. He excelled in mechanics and construction work and was a self-taught veterinarian. At one time he was employed by the Union Pacific Railroad in Pocatello. He was a member of the LDS Church and was a Lava school trustee many years, also serving as chairman of the school board. He worked with 4-H boys, instructing in grading, judging, and raising animals.

On Dec. 16, 1914, he married Sarah Smith of Lewiston, Utah in Logan. They settled near Pebble, later moved to Bancroft, and finally returned to the Lava area where they bought the original Smith homestead. They farmed this land and other holding until their retirement in 1971.

Mr. Byington is survived by his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Elaine DeLong of San Diego, Calif.; three sons, Myrl S. Byington of Lincoln City, Ore., Telford S. Byington of Lava, and Blaine H. Byington of Pocatello; two sisters, Vida Segal of Boise, and Florence Williams of Medford, Ore.; five brothers, Roy L. Byington of Layton, Utah, Archie Byington of Homedale, Idaho, Clarence L. Byington and Donald L. Byington, both of Lakeview, Ore., and Ardell Byington of Bountiful, Utah; 16 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Three sons, Vance S., Neal Dee, and J. Cecil Byington, preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Lava Hot Springs LDS chapel with Bishop Kenneth Andrus officiating. Burial will be at the Lava Hot Springs cemetery. Funeral arrangements are being made by Manning Funeral Chapel of Pocatello.
