Hertha Cyrene Frank Treier, 89, died peacefully on Friday, Nov. 24, 2006, surrounded by her family and friends.

She was born in the home of her parents, William and Louisa Schmedt Frank, in the Camp Ranch Community in Wilson County, Texas, on Sept. 6, 1917.

As a small child, she attended Green School and later attended the First Lutheran Church in Floresville, where she was baptized, confirmed, and married. In 1983, she and her husband transferred their membership to St. John's Lutheran Church in Poth, where they remained members until their deaths.

On March 30, 1941, she married Alfred Fritz Treier and they settled in the Stevens Community, where they spent the rest of their married life. Alfred and Hertha had four children, all daughters. The first-born was Alfreda; five years later, triplets Vaughnell, Verna, and Virginia arrived.

In 1956, Hertha started her career as the first female bus driver in Wilson County, working for the Poth Independent School District (ISD). In 1957, she started work in the Poth school lunchroom while also continuing to drive a school bus. In 1982, Hertha retired from Poth ISD, then worked in the home health care industry until 1991.

Hertha enjoyed singing in the church choir, and for many years assisted pastors once a month with services and communion to shut-ins and nursing home residents.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Hubert and George Frank; and three sisters, Martha Deskin, Lydia Gerdes, and Edna Pennartz. Also preceding her in death was her husband of 47 years, Alfred Fritz Treier, who died on Oct. 22, 1988.

Hertha is survived by her brother, Albert Pat Frank of Floresville. Also surviving Hertha are her four daughters, Alfreda Pennington and husband Frank, Vaughnell Gray and husband Joe, and Verna Fletcher, all of San Antonio, and Virginia Lyssy and husband Melvin of Kenedy; nine grandchildren, Jeffrey Pennington, Brian Fletcher and wife Jennifer, Shara Fletcher, Christopher Glass, Lisa Price, Laura Gray, Tamyra Albers and husband Keith, Laurie Lyssy, and Bradley Lyssy and wife Kimberly; four great-grandchildren, Tyler Price, Austin Price, Kyle Albers, and Cayla Albers; and numerous nieces and nephews and beloved friends.
Visitation began at 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 27, and a prayer service took place at 7 p.m. in the Vinyard Funeral Home in Floresville.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in St. John's Lutheran Church in Poth, officiated by Pastor David Collins.

Interment followed in St. John's Cemetery in Poth.

Serving as pallbearers were Gordon Deskin, Steven Deskin, William Frank Jr., Raymond Pennartz, John Himmelreich, and J.C. Hierholzer. Honorary pallbearers were E.J. Hierholzer, Kenneth Boening, Walter Lowak, Gary Buscheck, Ray Vasbinder, George Frank, and Louis Stobbs.
