George F. Newton
Millersburg, Oh -- George F. Newton, one of the oldest citizens is dead. He was born in Leicester, England, in 1813, and came with his parents to America in 1819, and was married in 1828 to Miss Eliza Gray in Jefferson county, Ohio. In 1837 he came to Holmes county. He was a prominent Democrat and a leader in the councils of his party. In 1843 he was elected county recorder and re-elected in 1846. Was elected county auditor in 1857 and re-elected in 1859. In 1854 he purchased the Holmes County Farmer, the official organ of the county and controlled it until 1859, when J. A. Estill purchased it. He was a writer of great force on all subjects all other subjects as well as political. He was a devoted friend of horticulture and was a life member of the Ohio State Agricultural society. He had completed the manuscript of a history of the county which for detail will be a model of exactness. He leaves the following named children: J. H. Newton of Newark, O., editor of the Advocate; D. G. Newton of Holmes County Farmer; Mrs. A. G. Sprankle, wife of the editor of Crestline, O., Advocate, and Mrs. Z. T. Dorr of Killbuck. His wife died last Feb., and a daughter, Mrs. Daniel Duer, died last Dec. Besides these two other daughters have preceded him to the grave.
