A boating accident at Ponto Lake on Saturday claimed the life of a former Backus resident, Gerald Tilbury, 22, Minneapolis, and another Minneapolis man, George R. Norman, 34, Noramn's 13 year-old stepson, Bobby Mayville, survived.
According to Cass County sheriff's office at Walker, the boat in which the three were fishing overturned when the two men tried to remedy trouble with the motor.
The boy able to cling to the capsized boat until Chas. Gaile, a resident on the lake, heard his cries for help and came to his rescue.
??? Taylor, a diver recovered the bodies of the two men after a 20 minute search. The accident happened about 12:30, authorities said.
Gerald Tilbury had been living in Minneapolis the past two years. He is the son of LeRoy Tilbury and Frances Zella Dickson Tilbury.
Other survivors include seven brothers, Arnold, David, Calvin, Russell, Mark, Stanley, and Charles; two sisters, Elvina Mae Tilbury and Elverna; his grandmother, Mrs. J W. Tilbury, Backus.
Funeral services were held 2 pm Wednesday at eh Church of the Nazarene in Backus with the Rev. Thomas Lowry officiating. Intermant was in the Evergreen Cemetery, Backus.
