Charles was a Civil War Soldier, and served as a drummer. He marched in the funeral of Abraham Lincoln, and Admiral Farragut. After the war he lived in Dedham, Mass., and Lynn, Mass. where he was a piano tuner. He had become blinded in the war due to the fact a cap from a musket caught him in the eye.
