John Jay Crocheron was a native of Staten Island, New York and the son of John Crocheron and Johanna Houseman. Crocheron had relocated to Alabama by the 1820s. He was elected as one of 12 directors for the Bank of the state of Alabama in 1823 and 1824. He established a large plantation of many thousands of acres on the Alabama River in Dallas County and named it Elm Bluff. He built a large, three-story Greek Revival style house in the center of this plantation in 1845. John Jay Crocheron never married. He remained in Alabama during the American Civil War and died in 1864.
