Deacon Ralph A. Aconfora Sr., 79, formerly of Ansonia, died Oct. 21 at the Brook Hollow Health Care, Wallingford. He was the husband of the late Angela M. Spagnolo Aconfora.

Deacon Ralph or "Brother Ralph," as he was called, was born March 2, 1929 in Derby, son of the late Alphonse J. and Vincenza Geloso Aconfora.

Mr. Aconfora was a graduate of Fairfield University in 1951 earning his master's degree and sixth-year certificate. He served his country in Korea as an Army medical technician.

For 28 years, he played an important role in the lives of Ansonia's young people. He was a high school science teacher, school system science coordinator, and for nine years coordinator of Special Education. He retired from the Ansonia Public School System in 1986.

He was a dedicated and active parishioner of the Holy Rosary Church in Ansonia for all his adult life. He was the first lay commentator/lector to serve at the Liturgy of the Mass, which started in 1962. He was the president of the parish CCD Executive Board for 11 years; and founder and chairman of the Parish Activities Comm., which was responsible for the burning of the mortgage of the new Holy Rosary Church, June 30, 1974.
He was the chairman of the comm. of the 75th anniversary of the church and was present and honored at the Holy Rosary 100th Anniversary Mass and dinner on Oct. 12, 2008. He was appointed the first Eucharistic Minister at the Church.

On June 12, 1977, after three years of study at St. Thomas Seminary, he was ordained a Permanent Deacon and assigned to Holy Rosary Church. He has always made himself available to his Pastor and any parishioners who were in need of counsel or support and truly enjoyed and gave his all to his ministry at Holy Rosary Church.

Survivors include three sons, Sam and his wife, Kristin of Southbury, Ralph A. Jr. and his fiancée, Michelle Mongillo of Branford, and Alphonse J. and his wife, Nancy of Orange; a sister, Josephine Grillo of Ansonia; nine grandchildren, Dane, Kate, Angelica, Nicholas, Gianna, Mitchell, Megan, Alyssa, and Jenna Aconfora; a nephew, Robert Coughlin of Md.; a niece, Patricia Gill of Ansonia; and his entire parish family.

Visiting hours will be conducted Friday, Oct. 24, 4-8 p.m. at the Holy Rosary Church, 10 Father Salemi Drive, Ansonia. Services are Saturday, Oct. 25 at 10 a.m. at the Holy Rosary Church. Burial with military honors will follow in Mt. St. Peter's Cemetery, Derby.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Holy Rosary Church Kitchen Renovation Fund through the funeral home. The Spinelli-Malerba-Ricciuti Funeral Home, 62 Beaver St., Ansonia handled the arrangements.
