Maroa Wilcox. Wife of T.J. Wilcox.

Young in life, alone in death.

This single grave marker is all that remains of the memory of Maroa Wilcox. Located in a now residential area of Dublin Ohio, the lone grave stone has held up wonderfully since Maroa's death in 1870.

I'm intrigued by this grave and the person who lies within.

Who was Maroa Wilcox ? How did she live? How did she die? [11/08 - It is said that she died during childbirth .. strictly hearsay and speculative] It has also been suggested that cause of death was Consumption, an old medical term for forms of tuberculosis.

Where is her husband, T.J.? A million questions with more than likely, few answers.

I am going to attempt to answer some of these questions and will update this page if I am able to find anything additional. [12/08 - Search of census records have revealed nothing on Maroa Wilcox.]

At this site there are no indications of any other burials.
Speculation suggest that in the mid to late 1800s, this was more than likely family owned property in the open farmlands of central Ohio.

The property this grave sits on appears now to be owned, or at least maintained by the City of Dublin Ohio. [11/08 - confirmed]

While little is known about this grave site, City sources have indicated that it was discovered by land developers as they were clearing the area for construction of residential housing sometime in the mid 1980s.

The fence surrounding the grave site was constructed after the discovery and resetting of the marker. The marker was discovered laying on/under the ground covered by years of dirt, debris and vegetation.

Whoever you were, however you lived .. rest in peace Maroa Wilcox.

Exciting UPDATE!! 10/29/2010:

Thanks to Find A Grave member Bert Waits, several unanswered questions now have answers! Maroa's husband, T.J. Wilcox is in fact Civil War veteran PVT.Thomas J.(Jacob)Wilcox who is buried in Dublin Cemetery [Dublin Ohio]

Bert's information possibly enforces the speculation that Maroa's demise at such a young age was a result of or related to childbirth complications encountered with the birth of their only child, a daughter named Alice R Wilcox June 1869 - Nov 25 1906).

An 1870 census shows Thomas J Wilcox with a 1 year old daughter Alice. A year or so following Maroa's death, Thomas remarried. See family link to Thomas's memorial page for further information on him.

Exciting UPDATE # 2! 12/17/12

Through the research efforts of Mr. Ron Benson, Maroa's identity is further corroborated by the discovery of records documenting the marriage of Thomas J Wilcox to a Mary M.(Maroa??) Brown on March 22,1866. ( See document image posted by Ron.)

Record shows Mary to be age 16 at the time of marriage and that corresponds to her having been born in 1850 as indicated by the info on her marker stone.

It is however only speculative at this time to suggest that "Maroa" was probably a family nick name OR Mary's middle name that was used at the time of burial.
