Our beautiful wife, mother, grandma, sister, aunt, and friend, Marilyn Southam Volmer Kolkena, passed away on September 21, 2000 at the University of Utah Medical Center from Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

Born November 5, 1933 in Salt Lake City, UT to Howard Harold and Bridget Anna Dougherty Southam. Married Jack Lee Volmer on July 21, 1955 in Sacred Heart Church in Salt Lake City, UT. They were blessed with three wonderful children, Linda Ann Auwerda, Steven John Volmer, and Nancy Kay Volmer, as well as six grandchildren. Jack died on May 25, 1985 from Colon Cancer.

Married Arnold J. Kolkena on August 6, 1994 in St. Vincent's Church and acquired three stepchildren, Margaret, Raymond, and Roger Kolkena, as well as six step-grandchildren.

Marilyn graduated from the South High Class of '52. Attended St. Mary of the Wasatch College, and graduated from Holy Cross Hospital School of Nursing in 1955. She was honored to receive the Bishop Hunt Outstanding Nurse Award. Later she received a Bachelors degree from St. Francis College in Illinois.

She worked at Holy Cross Catholic Hospital following graduation until starting a family. She was privileged to work at Shriner's Hospital for Children for 35 and one-half years in many positions, the last being Director of Surgical Services. Was selected, "Employee of the Year." She was an excellent nurse and professional in all aspects. Active in the National Association of Orthopedic Nurses, Association of Operating Room Nurses, and Holy Cross Hospital Alumnae Association.

Member of St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church, where she was active in several organizations and held many offices over the years. Served many years as a Eucharistic Minister. She was also a member of the Catholic Women's League and enjoyed going to their annual luncheon.

Marilyn loved to have a good time and to make holidays and birthdays a special occasion for her family. She enjoyed writing rhyming poems for others on special occasions, and many people are fortunate to have these as a gift of her quick wit and humor. She took pleasure in reading, traveling, dinner parties, the Utah Symphony, the Utah Shakespearean Festival, Pioneer Memorial Theatre, the St. Patrick's Day Parade, being Irish, attending her grandchildren's activities, drives in the canyons, luncheons with her sisters, and visiting with her numerous friends, whom she considered part of her family.

She is survived by her loving husband, Arnold; children, Linda, Steve, and Nancy; grandchildren: Nathan, Jennifer, Emily, Jackelyn, Joshua, and Betsy; stepchildren: Margaret, Raymond (Eva), Roger (Rachel); step- grandchildren: Matthew, Elizabeth, Kelly, Patrick, Daniel, and Alex; sisters: Arlene (William) Erdmann, and Lilabeth (Jim) Naccarato; brother-in-law, Bengt F. Anderson; and eight nieces and nephews.
