To ensure that he could choose his own training path, Gadda enlisted in the US Army in February 1966. He was assigned to Vietnam in November 1966, as a helicopter mechanic attached to a medical battalion. He attained the rank of Private First Class (PFC)
Gadda was killed in action on November 6, 1966, when the plane he was in crashed.
He is buried in Cavalry Cemetery in Paterson, NJ.
