James was an older brother of Daniel Harrison Thompson and Sarah Jane (Thompson) Adams.

from the 1976 Hendricks County History (Page 577):

Born a son of William and Elizabeth (Cundiff) Thompson in Kentucky in 1827, James W. Thompson married Elizabeth Jane Hale in Hendricks County on Dec. 10, 1845. Their early married life was spent in Middle Township. In January 1863, James W. Thompson bought the half section (320 acres) of land in Union Township originally entered by Isaac Vieley in 1831 minus the original town of New Elizabeth (later Lizton) and four lots, all together consisting of about 309 acres just west of Lizton. James moved his family, consisting of his wife Elizabeth and seven children (Sarah, John, Amanda, Henry, James William, Susan and George) [another child (Jacob) was born afterward] to a house on the State Road (now US 136) just west of town where the Vieley's lived.

James M. Thompson enlarged the town of New Elizabeth with three additions. He sold the right-of-way across his place for a railroad and station to the Indianapolis and Bloomington Railroad Company for one dollar and a lifetime railroad pass. He used the pass to go to Indianapolis to the Board of Trade of which he was a member. In 1872, he gave the Lizton Christian Church a large lot on Church Street where the original building forming the current church was then built. His house (shown in the photo) was next to the railroad station, where the old hotel had been, and he lived there until he died in 1900.

from the Republican for Sept. 20, 1900:

James Thompson Sr. died Sept. 13 after a lingering illness, and was buried Saturday in the Vieley cemetery.
