William Edwin Alden

William Edwin Alden, a life long resident of Massena, died Sunday night about midnight at his home on what is known as the River Cross road, four miles from this village. He was nearly 74 years of age. Death followed a long period of failing health, due to nervous paralysis.

He was born in Massena on March 11, 1854, son of William and Fanny Dutton Alden, and was a direct descendant of the famous John and Priscilla Alden, of Puritan days. He was one of a family of eight children. His father was born at Crown Point, NY, and his mother at Chester, VT.

His grandfather, William S. Alden, was one of the pioneer settlers of Massena, coming from Vermont.

Mr. Alden's birth occurred on a farm on the St. Lawrence river about a mile from the home where he died. When he was about a year old, he moved with his parents to the present home. He had always been a farmer.

His marriage to Miss Elizabeth C. Farlinger, of Charlottenburg, Ontario, took place on February 10, 1875. Her father died when she was a girl of 14. About 1872 she came to Massena to work, and it was here that she met Mr. Alden. The marriage took place at her home in Canada. They immediately began housekeeping on the old Alden farm.

Four children were born to the couple. Their oldest daughter, Miss Grace Alden, died while teaching school in Spearfish, SD, 18 years ago.

Surviving Mr. Alden, besides his wife, are two daughters, Mrs. Florence Barlow, living at home, and Mrs. Fred N. Capell, of Massena; one son, Roy W. E. Alen, who operates the home farm; one sister, Mrs. Philo Talcott, of Massena, three brothers, George and Sheridan Alden, of Massena, and Berton Alden, of Madrid; three grandchildren, Mrs. Paul Joslin, of Watertown, Miss Dorothy Alden and Harvey Capell, of Massena; and two great-grandchildren, Eleanor Ruth Joslin anjd Ralph Alden Joslin, of Watertown.

The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock from the home, Rev. F. E. Loan, of the Methodist Episcopal church, officiating, assisted by Rev. Norman McLellan. Burial was made at Pine Grove Cemetery.
