A telegram was received on Sunday by W. Edwin Alden, of this place, announcing the death of his eldest daughter, Grace E Alden, at Deadwood, South Dakota. This was the
first intimation the family had of her serious illness.
They received a letter Monday that she had written Thursday stating that she had submitted to a slight operation for a small swelling or abscess under her ear, but that she was getting along nicely as expected to be back at work this week, and the telegram was a shock that almost prostrated her family.
Miss Alden was a teacher in the state normal school at Spearfish, South Dakota, being supervisor and critic teacher in the seventh and eighth grades, having gone there last fall.
She was a graduate of Massena high school and the Potsdam normal and later a teacher at Massena high school, Brasher-Stockholm high school and Carthage high school, and was a very successful teacher.
She was born in Massena March 20, 1876 and was the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Alden, and besides her parents she is survived by two sisters and one brother, who, have the sympathy of a large circle of friends in their bereavement.
The body is expected today at noon accompanied by Dr. Brown, her physician, and the funeral will be held from the family home Friday afternoon at half-past one o'clock. Rev. W. H. Baker, pastor of the M.E. church, officiating.
