Bertha Iona (Curtis) Dunbar was a daughter of Samuel Benton ("Sam") Curtis and Sarah Anne (Shaw) Curtis. Sarah was born in England, and married Sam on 25 Oct. 1888 in the community of Fitzgerald (Anderson County). Together Sam and Annie had a daughter (Bertha) and a son (Willie), plus two stillborn children. In the early 1890s Annie contracted tuberculosis and died when Bertha was under three years of age.

On 4 May 1895 Sam married Betty Jane Fitzgerald, daughter of John Edgar Fitzgerald and Lizzie Lunsford. Together, Sam and Betty Jane raised Bertha, her younger brother William (Willie) and their half-siblings who followed: Beula, Viola, Oliver, Conley, Lloyd, Frank, Jeffie Mae and Annie Bell.

On 19 May 1907 Bertha Curtis married John William Dunbar in Van Zandt County, Texas. He was a son of James (Jim) Thomas Dunbar and Lou E. (Cox) Dunbar. They had one son who grew up to have a family of his own--John "Wesley" Dunbar--and one infant girl who died at birth or shortly thereafter.
