Lloyd enlisted in the U.S. Army as a private at Fort Meade, Maryland, on April 7, 1941, was in foreign service from February 1944 to October 1945, and ended military service on October 17, 1945.

Punk was the oldest of four children. He was baptized by Rev. Bartholomew, pastor of St. John's Church in Freeland, at the home of William Henry Heller. He married Agnes Remish , and the couple raised two sons.
