Early in life he was a florist, but during the Civil War he was a Confederate soldier. He enlisted and served as a sergeant in Company A of the 1st Mississippi Light Artillery. Sergeant Hatch was captured at Vicksburg July 4, 1863, and paroled July 7, 1863. At the end of the war, he surrendered at Citronelle, Alabama, May 4, 1865, and was paroled at Jackson, Mississippi May 12, 1865. He, his wife Mary, and his children moved to Florida some time between 1870 and 1880 where he continued his occupation as a horticulturist.
