Janice Ada Baker, 70, of Holiday Island, died Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003, in Eureka Springs. She was born July 21, 1932, in Prescott, Ariz.
She was one of triplet daughters born to Arthur George and Ethel Beatrice (Robinson) Baker. Fran Light of Holiday Island, recently deceased, was another of these triplets.
Janice attended Prescott schools and graduated from Prescott High School in 1950. She then attended Northern Arizona University, where she majored in elementary education. She also attended Whittier College in California.
She loved music and played French horn, winning superior ratings in many music festivals. Later, she played as a member of the Bakersfield (California) Symphony. She also sang soprano in duets, trios, small groups and church choirs for many years. She felt honored to be a member of the famous "Shrine of the Ages" Choir, which sings every Easter on the rim of the Grand Canyon in Arizona.
After graduating from Northern Arizona University, she began teaching elementary school in Bakersfield, Calif., where she subsequently taught for more than 30 years. A fine teacher, she influenced the lives of many children. More recently, she volunteered as a tutor of reading for children in the Bakersfield area.
During those 30 years, she took up hobbies including raising horses, at one time having a stable of 20 horses. She also loved her dogs. During summers, she often enjoyed traveling in her camper throughout the western United States. In 2002, she moved to Holiday Island, especially to be near her sister Fran.
Survivors include two sisters and two nephews.
