Fern P. Doty, 75, Independence, Mo., former Paolan, died Saturday, Sept. 17, 1977, at the Independence Sanitarium. The son of Oscar and Louise Dorman Doty, he was born at Waverly Dec. 24, 1902.

More commonly known as Phi, he moved with his family to Paola when he was a small child. He attended schools here and graduated from the Paola High School in 1922. He attended the University of Arkansas and Northwestern University.

Following Vernon Lane, Mr. Doty was the second to direct the newly organized Chamber of Commerce. With his sister, Mrs. Edna McCullough, he worked to form the first coat factory in Paola.

On Jan. 21, 1932, he was married in Paola to Muriel Young of Hillsdale. They moved to Independence in 1940, where he was manager of the Independence Chamber of Commerce. He was active in the promotion of the first Santa-Cali-Gon festival in Independence in 1940. He later managed chambers of commerce in Michigan, Illinois and Iowa.

They returned to Independence in 1951 and Mr. Doty was employed in the savings bond division of the U.S. Treasury. He was the Independence city clerk for 13 years before his retirement in 1968.

Mr. Doty was a member of the National Association of Commercial Organization Secretaries, and the International Institute of Municipal Clerks and the city clerks and finance officers division of the Missouri Municipal League. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Independence.

Immediate survivors include his wife, Mrs. Muriel Doty of the home in Independence, Mo.; a son, Roger F. Doty, Indianapolis, Ind.; a sister, Mrs. Edna McCullough, Paola, and two grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 tonight, Monday, at the Carson Independence Chapel. Services will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, at the chapel. Memorial contributions can be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Independence.
