Richard Franklin Carnes, 72, died May 7 of natural causes while gardening at his Meade Creek farm.
Born Oct. 19, 1919, in a Sheridan railroad car to Archie and Carrie Alice Burling Carnes, he served in the Pacific Theater in World War II and received several decorations.
He married Alice Krout on June 19, 1947, in Sheridan, and they lived in Sheridan.
Mr. Carnes worked 13 years at the Veterans Administration Medical Center before opening Carnes Auto Service, which he operated for eight years.
He and his wife then operated Ideal Cleaners for 10 years before retiring.
A self-taught carpenter, plumber, electrician, and mechanic, he was a lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans and enjoyed hunting, prospecting in the Big Horns and farming.
A half brother preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Kenneth of Laramie and Newcastle and Troy of Sheridan; a daughter, Ginger Norton, Sheridan; a brother, Jay Carnes, El Cajon, Calif.; three sisters, Montana Berele, San Diego, LaFawn Baer, Rathdrum, Idaho, and Betty Hudson, El Cajon; a half brother, Bill Short, Billings; two half sisters, LaVada May, Billings, and Doris Kramer, Roundup, Mont.; and seven grandchildren.
Services are 10a.m. Tuesday at Champion Funeral Home, Major Groderberg and the Rev. Steve Smith officiating, with burial in Mount Hope Cemetery, Big Horn.
