Mrs. Bessie Brown Cooke, 84, widow of William H. Cooke died in Massena Memorial Hospital at 11:45 o'clock Wednesday morning, November 9, 1960.
Mrs. Cooke had been in failing health for the past year and entered the hospital a week ago.
She was born in Glengarry County, Canada, June 19, 1876, and was married to Mr. Cooke January 2, 1899 in Brockville. In 1906 the family moved to Alexandria Bay and they came to Massena in 1917 when Mr. Cooke accepted a position as a marine engineer for the St. Lawrence River Power Company.
Since coming to Massena they have resided at 16 Spruce Street. Mr. Cooke died June 3, 1940.
Mr. and Mrs. Cooke have always been active in the First Methodist Church. For years, they were the leaders of the work in Pine Grove Chapel when it was owned by the Methodist Society. Mrs. Cooke was a member of the Woman's Society of Christian Service.
Even though her health was failing, Mrs. Cooke attended church services as long as it was possible for her to do so.
She was a member of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union, Cretona Chapter 516, OES, Massena Court 70, Order of Amaranth, and the Grandmothers Club.
Surviving are four sons, Howard G. Cooke, Tampa, FL, Victor C. Cooke, Buffalo, Luther W. Cooke, Auburn, and A. Lincoln Cooke, Massena; three daughters, Mrs. Lillian C. Reno, Massena, Miss Margaret A. Cooke, at home, and Miss Elizabeth Cooke, Boston, MA; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
