Prussian General, involved in the German Revolution and Lawyer in Berlin. Born in Hannover in 1786 he was a member of a well known aristocratic family with many members in political and military careers. Following his family tradition he became a Royal Prussian General of the Infantry and was the last commander of the Fort Rastatt, a battleground in the German revolutionary movement of 1848. He was the son of the Prussian General Gerhard von Scharnhorst. In August of 1818 he had married Agnes von Gneisenau (1800-1822). Their son August von Scharnhorst was the last male member of this family. Being fluent in Portuguese 1811-1813 Wilhelm von Scharnhorst served with the English-German Legion in Portugal and Spain, translating documents into German. He became the major of the 8th Marine Corps. Later he served in Rastatt and in Mai of 1849 he was the commanding officer who fought against the uprising German revolution on 1848/49, initiated by revolting officers of his own army, and German peasants. (Badische Revolution). In 1850 he retired from his military career and became a lawyer in Berlin, earning a seat at the Prussian Academy of Science. While vacationing in Bad Ems in 1854 he died of a stroke. The street where this cemetery is located is named after his family.
