OBITUARY Iron River Reporter Sep 3 1929 “Man Drowned In Lake Sunday: Tragedy Ends Italian Picnic As Lake Takes Life of Dominic Rosetti”
Tragedy wrote the finale to the Giodano Bruno, Italian society, picnic held Sunday at Iron lake when Dominic Rosetti, 59, of the Homer location, was drowned at 7 p.m. at the southwest end of the lake.
At the time, Rosetti was in the water alone about 50 feet from shore, swimming toward the shore, when he was apparently seized with a cramp and disappeared in about nine feet of water. His two sons, Henry and Tony, were on the shore watching him.
Coroner W.J. Johns of Iron River was immediately called to the scene of the disaster and at 9:30 p.m. the body was recovered with grappling hooks. A strong undertow had carried the body some distance from the place of drowning.
WAS GOOD SWIMMER Rosetti is said to have been an excellent swimmer. A matter of seven or eight years ago he demonstrated his ability several times by swimming across Iron lake with no apparent effort. On the day of the picnic he was in the water much of the time and seemed to have still retained a great deal of his old swimming ability.
For the past 22 years he has been employed at the James mine, the first 20 of which were spent underground. During the last two years he has been on the surface. In 1926 and 1928 he was a candidate for mine inspector.
He was born in Italy and came to this country in 1901. He lived for a short time in Loretto and Iron Mountain before coming to Iron River.
He leaves to mourn his death three sons, Henry and Tony of Iron River and Patsy of Kenosha, and three daughters, Mrs. Mary Bigari of Iron River, Mrs. Adelia Varrani of Eveleth, Minn. and Mrs. Eliza Brunamonti of Iron River. His wife preceded him in death.
The funeral will probably be held tomorrow morning. Final arrangements will not be made until the arrival of the daughter from Eveleth, Minn.
