Her parents moved to Star Valley in 1888, settling near Freedom in the area known as glen or the Salt River Valley. In 1900 they moved to Afton, where her father had an interest in a creamery with William W. Burton and George Osmond. Irene's time was spent in milking cows and making cheese.
In 1903 she spent the year at Logan, and during this time her mother died. Being the oldest daughter, it fell her lot to do her best in caring for the family until her father re-married Margaret Barlow in 1904. she died in 1908.

Last fall the Burtons moved to Afton and were residing here at the time of her death.

Her husband was called on an LDS mission to England and she supported him in this calling, when she had two small children at home to care for.
