James H. was the son of Thomas B. and Martha Mariah CULLOM. In the U.S. Civil War, he enlisted March 5, 1862 in Co. G., 53rd Reg. Illinois Infantry at Pontiac, Illinois. He died May 17, 1863 in Pest Hospital at Memphis, Tennessee of the Small Pox disease. James was originally buried at Fort Pickering in Memphis and later reinterred in the Memphis National Cemetery.

James' mother, Martha, received a mother's pension from his service after her second husband, Samuel Malone died in 1881.
