Started a family of his own in Greene Co, NY where he married Elizabeth Hogeboom. After her death, he remarried Agness Becker of Prattsville, NY and in 1835 moved to Butler Twp., Branch Co, MI. In 1848 the family moved again to South Grove Twp., DeKalb Co, IL where he engaged in farming. In 1856, Agness died leaving him again widowed, and he married his third wife Hannah S. Lancey in 1857. He was known for his Christian ethics and dedication, and was active in the Underground Railroad in South Grove before the Civil War. He served his country under Captain John S. Brown in Co. C., 52 Illinois Infantry. After the war, he received land west of Kingsley, MI under the Homestead Act, where he moved in 1865 and remained until his death.
