Clara was the eighth of nine children, and the youngest daughter. Before she married, she worked in a silk mill.
One weekend her brother, Dan, took her to visit their sister, Francis, in Bethlehem, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. Harry Schoenberger was visiting, and he and Clara fell in love. Clara married Harry in Bethlehem on July 4, 1934. The couple raised five sons and one daughter.
