"It was in 1856 that Mr. (James M.) Able was joined in wedlock to Miss (Susan) Elmina Hodges, who was born in South Carolina, January 9, 1837, and who has proven to him a devoted helpmate and companion in life's journey. Her parents were Thompson and Mahala (Hill) Hodges, both of whom were natives of South Carolina*, where they were married, removing thence to Alabama."

James & Elmina Able had four children:

1. Thomas Jefferson Able (1855-1944) md. 1st to Mary Magdalene "Molly" Poland; md. 2nd to Mary Minerva McElreath (no children by 2nd marriage);
2. Fannie Able (1859-1941) md. W.M. "Mack" Franklin;
3. Victoria Able (1860-1920) md. John R. Miller;
4. Canzada Able (1866-1952) md. James Nelson Agee.
