Dorothy Nugent was born in South Carolina to parents Matthew Nugent and Isabel Elizabeth MacBray.

In 1785 in North Carolina, she married Irishman Gerard Chittocque Brandon. The couple moved to Adams County, Mississippi and built Selma Plantation.

Gerard and Dorothy had seven children: Margaret Lindsay Brandon, Gerard Chittocque Brandon, Elizabeth Brandon, Matthew Nugent Brandon, Robert Emmett Brandon, Susannan Brandon, and William Lindsay Brandon.

Their son, Gerard, went on to become the Mississippi's 4th (1825–1826) and 6th (1826–1832) governor.
