FRANKLIN -- Marjorie Gates Irish, age 77, widow of Robert H. Irish, died Sunday evening, June 17, 2001, at the Carriage House in Franklin.

She was born Feb. 19, 1924 in St. Albans, the daughter of the late Paul Hayden & Vera Hugh Gates.

Marjorie was raised in Franklin and returned in 1980. She was Lay Speaker and served on church council at the Franklin United Church. She was a 1943 graduate of UVM with a B.S. in Biology.

Marjorie was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII. She enlisted Dec. 4, 1944 and did her basic training at Fort Oglethorpe, Ga.; she then served as a psychiatric aide at Camp Upton, N.Y., attended P.T. School at O'Reilly General Hospital in Springfield, Mo., and was commissioned to Ft. Devens General Hospital in Hyer, Mass., Percy James General Hospital Amputee Center in Battle Creek, Mich., and Ft. Custer Rehabilitation Center in Ft. Custer, Mich. She was a life member of the American Legion Post #42 in Enosburg.

She married Robert H. Irish Aug. 12, 1946. Marjorie raised her family and practiced physical therapy in California, Arizona and New Jersey in hospitals and rehabilitation centers. While living in New Jersey she was a deaconess at Fords Presbyterian Church.

She was a lifetime member of the American Physical Therapy Assoc., Franklin County Assoc. of Retired Teachers, Franklin County Republican Committee, member of the Order of Eastern Star Martha Washington Chapter serving as Worthy Matron, Grand Chaplain of the State of Vermont, and Grand Representative to the State of Washington; Director of Franklin Telephone Co. & FELCO. In the past several years she was a member of the Healing Circle Cancer Support Group.

Marjorie enjoyed collecting, especially postcards and loved a good game of cards, a hot cup of tea, and someone to chat with. She was devoted to her family and community.

She is survived by a son and his wife Robert & Linda Irish and their children, Amber & Daniel of Spokane, Wash.; three daughters and their husbands, Rebecca & George Raynak and their children, Jennifer & Geoffrey of Franklin, Martha & Andrew Bodnarik and their children, Julia & Michael of Warner, N.H., and Mary Jo & Benjamin Norris and their children, Benjamin & Rosalie of Delmar, N.Y.; two brothers and their wives, Charles & Priscilla Gates and Hugh & Cynthia Gates, all of Franklin; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three brothers, David Ewing Gates, Geoffrey Gates & Paul Hayden Gates; two sisters, Jane Gates Merriam & Mary Elizabeth Gates.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Franklin United Church. Interment will follow in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Franklin.

Friends and relatives may call on the family one hour prior to the funeral at the Franklin United Church.
