JOSHUA JINX CLAIMS ANOTHER LIFE
by Corky Corcoran, The Boerne Star
The jinx that has surrounded Joshua Creek took another life Saturday as a young Bandera resident lost his life in an accident on the Joshua Creek bridge. Michael Ray Schulte and his passenger, Wesley Kalka, both of Bandera, were returning from a picnic when the 1972 Dodge Charger they were driving was in collision with the guard rail on IH-10. This first accident resulted in property damage only, and the car was then pulled onto the bridge to do repairs to the damaged car. The occupants were working on their car and were on the traffic side of the automobile.
A car driven by a Florida man struck the Charger in the left rear fender and the impact knocked Kalka an estimated 31 feet into the guard rail. Schulte, who was working on the wheel, was knocked about 88 feet by the impact and likewise hit the guard rail.
The Kendall County EMS was called to the scene, but efforts to save the 24-year-old Schulte failed and he was pronounced dead on arrival at Bexar County Hospital in San Antonio.
Wesley Kalka, at last report, is in serious condition at Bexar County with head and leg injuries and multiple lacerations.
The driver and three passengers in the 1981 Ford that struck the Schulte car were uninjured. Highway Patrolman Joe Montgomery was at the scene and is continuing the investigation into the cause of the fatal accident.
